Giants' Shaun Williams out for season

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Safety Shaun Williams of the New York Giants will miss the rest of the season following knee surgery, it was reported Friday.

Williams had the operation Thursday to repair cartilage damage in his left knee.

He was injured in practice Sept. 24, landing awkwardly after intercepting a pass, the team said on its Web site.

Newsday reported that Williams' season is over.

Williams, the Giants' first-round draft choice out of UCLA in 1998, had 11 tackles and a forced fumble in two games this season. This is the second straight year he has been forced to end his season early because of a knee injury.

Rookie Gibril Wilson, who replaced Williams in Sunday's game against Cleveland, made two interceptions against the Browns.

"(Wilson) is very fast," Giants Coach Tom Coughlin told Newsday. "Speed is his asset. Speed, his attitude, competitiveness, his playing demeanor, all those things are positive for a young player."
