Report: Carey admits to using marijuana

OLYMPIA, Wash., Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Former University of Oregon running back Jordan Carey admits to having a substance abuse problem.

Carey was kicked off the Ducks' football team earlier this week for what Coach Mike Bellotti said were repeated violations of team rules.

In a statement, the native of Olympia, Wash., told his hometown newspaper, The Olympian, Wednesday: "I know that I have a substance abuse problem and that I need to work this through to move forward in a positive and healthy way. Over the summer, I worked on making different choices. But I was not successful."

He told the paper that traces of the active ingredient in marijuana were found in a drug screening test he took last week. It was his second violation in six months.

Last spring, he was put on probation and suspended for the 2004 season opener for the same violation.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pounder was the third player to leave the Oregon program in the past two weeks.
