Mets name Omar Minaya GM

NEW YORK, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Omar Minaya rejoined the New York Mets Thursday as general manager.

"This is a baseball man's dream," Minaya said at a news conference, where he was introduced by the team's principal owner, Fred Wilpon.

Minaya held a similar job with the Montreal Expos the last three years and is a former Mets assistant GM.

He replaces Jim Duquette.

"Omar will have the authority and the autonomy in the baseball department," Wilpon said. "He will make the final decisions in the baseball department. He will have the authority with respect to who the new manager will be, staff, scouts and player development."

Minaya, who also has the title of vice president of baseball operations, will be hiring a replacement for fired Manager Art Howe.
