HOUSTON, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Jeff Bagwell singled in the go-ahead run in the seventh Wednesday night, giving Houston its franchise-record 15th straight home win, 6-4 over St. Louis.
The Astros began the game a half game behind San Francisco in the race for the National League wild card berth. Houston inched a half game in front of the Chicago Cubs in the wild card battle.
Bagwell went three for four and Jeff Kent hit the 300th home run of his career.
Houston's Roger Clemens worked six innings, but did not figure in the decision. That left him with 18 victories and all but ended his bid for a 20-win season.
Clemens ran his strikeout total for the year to 218, his most in six seasons.
