COL FB: Northwestern 17, Minnesota 43

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Minnesota defeated Northwestern 43-17 in the Big Ten Conference opener for both schools at the Metrodome in Minneapolis Saturday.

Justin Valentine rushed for two touchdowns and had one reception.

Bryan Cupito completed 12-of-21 passes for 155 yards with two touchdowns for the Gophers (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten).

Laurence Maroney rushed 24 times for 145 yards and a touchdown for Minnesota. Paris Hamilton also had a touchdown, while Marion Barber III added 86 yards rushing on 22 carries in the win.

Brett Basanez completed 13-of-26 passes for 121 yards for the Wildcats (1-3, 0-1).

After taking an early lead with a field goal and touchdown, Minnesota scored three unanswered touchdowns during the second quarter to take a 23-point lead.
