Singh leads in quest for money record

FARMINGTON, Pa., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh, seeking his eighth win of the year and a single-season earnings record, maintained a two-shot lead Friday at the 84 Lumber Championship.

Singh shot a 4-under 68 Friday for a two-day total of 132. Former British Open Ben Curtis was two shots back, Chris DiMarco was third at 135 and Kent Jones, Joey Sindelar and J.P. Hayes were all at 137.

Singh is in the midst of one of the best seasons in the history of the PGA Tour. Among his victories have been the PGA Championship and Canadian Open.

Among those who have won eight tournaments in one season have been Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Sam Snead and Tiger Woods.

Only Woods, Paul Runyan, Ben Hogan, Snead and Nelson have won more than eight in one year.

Woods established a tour record for most money won in a single season with $9,188,321 in 2000. Singh, who replaced Woods as the world's top-ranked player earlier this month, will surpass that total with a victory this week.
