Red Sox starter Curt Schilling had eight shutout innings, striking out a season-high 14, but was not involved in the decision after closer Keith Foulke allowed the Orioles to take the lead in the ninth. Schilling allowed three hits and walked only one.

Javy Lopez gave the Orioles a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth off Foulke.

B.J. Ryan walked Kevin Youkilis leading off the home ninth and Bill Mueller followed with a double. Ryan (3-6) retired two batters before being replaced by Jorge Julio. Bellhorn's hit drove in Dave Roberts and Mueller.
