Maddox out six weeks with elbow injury

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- An elbow injury will sideline Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback Tommy Maddox for at least six weeks, Coach Bill Cowher said Monday.

An MRI showed that Maddox tore ligaments in his right elbow on a play that led to a Baltimore touchdown in a 30-13 Ravens' win over the Steelers Sunday.

Surgery apparently won't be required, Cowher said.

"He will not be able to throw for six weeks and then at that point he will be able to start throwing and we will see where he is. He may get a second opinion, but that looks like what the initial diagnosis is."

The quarterback was hurt in the second quarter. As he he backed up to pass, the ball was knocked away by the Ravens' Gary Baxter and recovered by Terry Suggs, setting up a short touchdown run by Jamal Lewis.

Maddox, who was replaced by rookie Ben Roethlisberger, was later on the sidelines with his right elbow in a sling.

Maddox completed four of 13 passes for 67 yards. Roethlisberger was 12 of 20 for 176 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Roethlisberger was the 11th overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.
