Europe wins Ryder Cup golf matches

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Sept. 19 (UPI) -- The Europeans beat the United States to win the Ryder Cup golf matches Sunday.

Lee Westwood defeated Kenny Perry 1-up to clinch the victory for the Europeans. Colin Montgomerie made it official moments later after he won his match with David Toms 1-up to surpass the needed 14 points.

The Europeans carried a record 11-5 lead into Sunday's singles at Oakland Hills and continued on to take the Ryder Cup for the fourth time in the last five competitions by an 18 1/2 to 9 1/2 margin.

Tiger Woods defeated Paul Casey 3 & 2 and Jim Furyk had a 6 & 4 win over David Howell in early Sunday play, but the Europeans had built too big a lead to overcome.

Phil Mickelson lost to Sergio Garcia as the Spaniard won three straight holes around the turn en route to a 3 and 2 victory.

Davis Love III never trailed in his match against Darren Clarke, who battled back to get a half-point.
