SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The 700th home run of Barry Bonds' career Friday night helped San Francisco defeat San Diego, 4-1, and stay atop the National League's wild card race.
Bonds produced the milestone blast in the third inning off San Diego starter Jake Peavy. It was his 41st homer of the season.
San Francisco remained a half game in front of the Chicago Cubs in the battle for the wild card berth. Houston is two games behind.
The Giants loaded the bases in the first and Bonds drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch. A.J. Pierzynski then singled in two runs to make it 3-0.
The win went to Noah Lowery, who gave up one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings.
