Barry Bonds hits 700th home run

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- San Francisco slugger Barry Bonds became the third player in major league history to hit 700 home runs Friday night.

Bonds reached the milestone with a solo blast in the third inning of San Francisco's meeting with the San Diego Padres.

He joined Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron as the only players to reach 700 career homers. Ruth hit 714 in his career and Aaron holds the all-time record with 755.

Bonds hit his 699th homer last Sunday and then went without a home run during a three-game series in Milwaukee earlier this week.

His home run Friday night came off San Diego's Jake Peavy. It was Bonds' 41st of the season.
