SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Tim Rattay learned Monday that he suffered a separation of his right shoulder on Sunday.
Rattay received the news after undergoing an MRI on Monday. Coach Dennis Erickson announced backup Ken Dorsey will start this Sunday's contest in New Orleans and Rattay hopefully will serve as the backup.
Rattay, who made three starts last year as a backup to Jeff Garcia, is in his first season as the No. 1 signal caller. He apparently was injured on a sack by Atlanta's Rod Coleman.
Dorsey filled in, but later left with a shoulder stinger and Rattay re-entered the game at the start of the fourth quarter.
He rallied the 49ers' offense late in the game to finish 18-of-31 for 175 yards and two touchdowns in a 21-19 loss.
