MLB: Seattle 2, Boston 0

SEATTLE, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- Gil Meche pitched a five-hit shutout and Raul Ibanez hit a two-run homer Sunday as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Boston Red Sox, 2-0.

Meche (5-6) allowed three singles and two doubles. The righthander picked up his third career complete game, and the second shutout of his career.

For Boston, it snapped a string of seven straight series victories. The loss, combined with the Yankees' victory over the Orioles Sunday, increased New York's lead in the AL East to 3 1/2 games. Boston has still won six of eight, 16 of 19, and 22 of 26.

Boston starter Derek Lowe (14-11) had his five-game winning streak halted. The righthander also allowed just five hits and one walk.
