MAINEVILLE, Ohio, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Des Smyth and Gary McCord shot 7-under 65s Friday to share the opening-round lead of the Kroger Classic.
The start of the tournament was delayed almost five hours due to fog. Nevertheless, the entire field of 77 players completed the opening round and 50 of them broke par.
Smyth, the Champions Tour rookie last year, had only one birdie in his first six holes. But he ran off six straight birdies beginning at the seventh, one off the tour record.
"I'm in dire need of a good tournament," Smyth said. "I played very well last year, but didn't win. I thought I would take a step forward this year, but I took two steps backward."
McCord made four consecutive birdies beginning at the eighth.
