Martelli signs contract extension

PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Saint Joseph's University announced Thursday the contract of men's basketball coach Phil Martelli had been extended.

The new deal extends through the 2011-12 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Martelli, who has coached the Hawks for nine years, guided his team to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament last season. The Hawks went 27-0 during the regular season and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tourney.

He has a 179-99 record with the school.
