DETROIT, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Kansas City's Joe Randa batted 6-for-7 and the Royals pounded out 26 hits Thursday, walloping the Detroit Tigers 26-5 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Randa tied American League and major league records by scoring six runs in the contest.
The Royals scored 11 runs in the third inning, with 13 straight batters reaching first base, tying a league mark.
The hit total was a team record for Kansas City and the score was the highest ever run up against the Tigers.
Craig Monroe and Rondell White had home runs for the Tigers, who had given the Royals a similar shellacking in a 17-7 win May 27.
