Roddick, Hewitt move into round of 16

NEW YORK, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Defending champion Andy Roddick and fourth-seeded Lleyton Hewitt posted easy wins Sunday to advance to the fourth round at the U.S. Open.

The second-seeded Roddick posted a 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Guillermo Canas. Roddick had 21 aces and did not commit a double fault in his win over the Argentine, who had won his previous two tournaments.

The former world No. 1 Roddick captured the 2003 U.S. Open by beating Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final.

Up next for Roddick will be 18th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo, a 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 winner against Austrian Alexander Peya.

The Australian Hewitt, 23, had no trouble with Spaniard Feliciano Lopez as he breezed to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win in only 91 minutes. Hewitt won here in 2001.

Hewitt, a former world No. 1, has won 13 straight and 18 of his last 19 matches on the tour.

Swede Joachim Johansson was a 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, 6-3 victor over Austrian Stefan Koubek.
