MLS: San Jose 1, New England 0

FOXBOROUGH, Mass., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A San Jose Earthquakes side missing four key players escaped Saturday with a 1-0 victory over the New England Revolution.

With San Jose forwards Brian Ching and Landon Donovan scoring in the U.S. national team's 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over El Salvador in the day's first match, it was replacement striker Chris Brown who stepped up for the depleted Earthquakes, heading home an Ian Russell cross just after halftime to seal the win for the visitors.

The former New England player's goal assured the Quakes of three points and at least the fourth place in the Western Conference.
