Red Sox get two players back

BOSTON, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Boston outfielders outfielders Trot Nixon and Gabe Kapler were restored to the Red Sox' eligible roster Saturday against Texas.

They won appeals of three-game suspensions Friday for their parts in a benches-clearing brawl in the contest against the NewYork Yankees on July 24.

Nixon remains on the 15-day disabled list as he recovers from a torn left quadriceps (shoulder) muscle. The team said he could be activated early next week.

"It's a credit to Major League Baseball that justice was served through the due process that the system allows," said General Manager Theo Epstein.

Kapler had contended that all he did was try and defend himself after his neck was grabbed from behind by Yankees' pitcher Tanyon Sturtze. Nixon said all he was doing was aiding Kapler, who went 0-for-2 Friday night and was not in the starting lineup Saturday.
