Williams lost four of the first five games in her match, but bounced back to take control. She will next play Switzerland's Patty Schnyder, who ousted Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6).
Capriati breezed through the first set in 17 minutes, but needed two breaks in the third set to move on.
Capriati will next meet 12th-seeded Ai Sugiyama, who crushed Jelena Kostanic, 6-1, 6-3.
