BOSTON, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Veteran California Angels outfielder Tim Salmon has decided to undergo season-ending surgeries on his left shoulder and left knee.
The injuries have plagued the 36-year-old Salmon the entire season, limiting him to just 60 of the Angels' 132 games.
Salmon, who says he has been in constant pain, decided Wednesday after meeting with team doctor Lewis Yocum to have the operations.
The team said on its Web site he has four tears in his shoulder and the knee is showing arthritic symptoms, with diminished cartilage and the potential for bone-on-bone contact.
"I've been dealing with this every day for the last six weeks," he said. He batted .253 with two home runs and 23 RBI.
Salmon is not retiring, but knows he faces a long and difficult rehabilitation. He said he's not counting on a successful return to the Angels in 2005, but would like to try to play at some point next year.
