MLB: Chicago Cubs 2, Montreal 1 (11 inn.)

MONTREAL, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Nomar Garciaparra scored on a wild pitch and Mark Grudzielanek drove in a run in the 11th Wednesday night as the Chicago Cubs edged Montreal, 2-1.

Kerry Wood pitched eight scoreless innings for Chicago, but did not figure into the decision. Wood allowed only five hits while striking out 11 and walking one.

Aramis Ramirez had three hits for the Cubs.

Montreal starter Tony Armas Jr., who had left each of his last two starts due to injuries, permitted four hits over six innings.

The game was scoreless into the 11th, but Garciaparra singled with one out, went to second on Sammy Sosa's hit and took third on a walk to Ramon Martinez.

Garciaparra then scored the game's first run on a wild pitch by Claudio Vargas and Grudzielanek followed with a single to bring home Sosa.
