PITTSBURGH, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Veteran cornerback Terry Fair was among six players cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday as the team got down to the league-mandated 71-player limit.
Fair was a first-round draft pick by the Detroit Lions out of Tennessee in 1998. A bum ankle has kept him from appearing in a regular-season game since early in the 2000 season, when he was with Carolina. He reached an injury settlement with the Steelers after never playing a down for them.
Fair has seven career interceptions, returning two of them for touchdowns.
Among others released Tuesday were fifth-round draft choice linebacker Nathaniel Adibi and first-year defensive tackle David Upchurch, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.
Pittsburgh has to make 18 more cuts by Sunday to get down to the regular season limit of 53.
