TEMPE, Ariz., Aug. 28 (UPI) -- The Arizona Cardinals have lost defensive end Fred Wakefield for six to eight weeks because of a stress fracture in his right foot.

The team did not disclose details Saturday about how he suffered the injury.

Earlier this week, tests did not reveal the fracture. It was discovered after results of a second MRI were released Friday as the Cardinals broke training camp before their pre-season contest against the Oakland Raiders Saturday night.

The 6-7, 288-pound Wakefield, a former undrafted free agent out of Illinois, was expected to be a key reserve on the Cardinals' defensive line after losing his starter's job in training camp to Kyle Vanden Bosch.

He has started 32 games in three years, has 90 tackles, seven sacks, and one interception return for a touchdown.

The injury-ravaged Cardinals also are without wide receivers Larry Fitzgerald (ankle) and Bryant Johnson (knee), cornerback Duane Starks (groin). Running back Marcel Shipp (fractured leg) and defensive tackle Kenny King (wrist) likely are out for the season.
