The only other United States boxer still in the tournament, light-heavyweight Andre Ward, had a semifinal bout scheduled for later Friday. Ward is unbeaten since 1998.

Dirrell led through the first round, but Golovkin scored on a flurry of punches inside the 40-second mark of the second round. That gave Golovkin a 10-7 advantage going into the third round.
