U.S. women defeat Brazil in soccer final

HERAKLIO, Greece, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Abby Wambach's goal 22 minutes into overtime Thursday night gave the U.S. women's soccer team the Olympic gold medal with a 2-1 decision over Brazil.

In what was likely the final international game for a group of veterans who brought women's soccer to life in the United States, Wambach delivered her fourth goal of the Games.

Mia Hamm, the all-time leading scorer in women's soccer, joined Kristine Lilly, Joy Fawcett, Brandi Chastain and Julie Foudy as the core of the U.S. team that became one of the best in the world.

They were part of the first women's World Cup championship team, grabbed gold at the Atlanta Olympics, won the World Cup again in 1999 and won silver in Sydney.

The winning goal came when Lilly sent the ball in on a corner kick. Wambach outjumped a defender and heded the ball into the back of the net.

The game was similar to the Americans' semifinal win over Germany in which they gave up a late tying goal in regulation and then won in overtime.
