CROMWELL, Conn., Aug. 26 (UPI) -- Corey Pavin eagled No. 2 and went on to seize a three-shot first round lead in the Buick Championship with an eight-under 62 Thursday.
Matt Weibring and Bob Burns were tied for second at five-under-par 65, followed by five others another stroke back.
Pavin got off to an amazing start. At the par-four second hole, he used a three-wood off the tee, then hit a wedge 12 feet short and right of the hole. His ball rolled into the cup for the unlikely eagle two.
The 1995 U.S. Open winner capped his strong run with a 45-foot chip-in birdie at No. 18.
Weibring had an up-and-down round with seven birdies but two bogeys. Burns' putting gave him a near flawless round with five birdies.
