LaTroy Hawkins replaced Greg Maddox in the ninth to try to close out the game for the Cubs but surrendered a two-out RBI double to Chris Magruder that tied the game at 2-2. Hawkins (3-4), nonetheless, picked up the win after blowing the save.

Mark Grudzielanek hit a controversial double leading off the bottom of the ninth and was at third on an error when Patterson won the game with his homer off Luis Vizcaino (4-4).
