IndyCar qualifying rained out

FOUNTAIN, Colo., Aug. 21 (UPI) -- Qualifying for Sunday's Honda Indy 225 at the Pikes Peak International Raceway was cancelled Saturday because of a late afternoon rain storm.

Series points leader Tony Kanaan was awarded the pole after posting the fastest times in practice. The Andretti Green Racing driver leads the 2004 championship by 50 points over Buddy Rice (433-383), who entered the season as a substitute driver for Rahal-Letterman Racing.

Kanaan and Rice have three wins each this season.

Starting on the front row with Kanaan will be his Andretti Green Racing teammate Dan Wheldon. Wheldon (346) is third in the overall standings, followed by Penske Racing teammates Helio Castroneves (298) and Sam Hornish Jr. (283).

Row two will include Vitor Meira and Dario Franchitti.
