Britain enjoys big day at Olympics

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 21 (UPI) -- British athletes excelled throughout the Olympics Saturday, giving their country perhaps its best day in the history of the Games.

The British haul was four golds, two silvers and three bronzes with the total of nine medals being more than any other nation could muster on one of the busiest days of the two-week sports carnival.

Britain even had a bronze medal won earlier in the Olympics changed to a silver when Germany was demoted from first to fourth in the team three-day equestrian event.

There were three medals for Britain in rowing, including a gold for the men's fours, and two golds and a silver in sailing.

Bradley Wiggins won the individual pursuit cycling gold medal, Kelly Sotherton won a bronze in the heptathon and David Davies finished third in the men's 1,500-meter swimming event.

In Sydney four years ago, Britain had its best showing in 80 years -- 28 medals. Nearing the halfway point of these Olympics, Britain has 18.
