ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- Friday's highlights at the Olympics:

-- Michael Phelps claimed his fifth gold medal and seventh overall with a win in the 100-meter butterfly. A win Sunday in the medley relay would give him the most medals ever won at a single Olympics. Mark Spitz still holds the record for most golds with seven.

-- The USA women's soccer team recorded a 2-1 quarterfinal win over Japan, setting up a semifinal meeting with World Cup champion Germany.

-- For the seventh time in as many games, the American softball squad shut out its opponent. The United States will next play Australia in the semifinals.

-- China and Russia both won seven medals while the United States claimed five. The Americans have 17 gold medals and 40 overall to 15 gold and 36 total for China.

-- American Mardy Fish, who has never gotten past the third round of a Grand Slam tennis event, won his semifinal match and will play for the Olympic title.

-- The United States women pulled away in the second for a 74-58 basketball win over Spain. The American men will play Lithuania on Saturday, a day on which 32 gold medals will be awarded.
