MLB: Atlanta 6, San Diego 5

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Braves squeaked by the San Diego Padres 6-5 on a 2-run homer by Andruw Jones in the ninth inning at PETCO Park.

Jones and Julio Franco each tallied three hits for the Braves, who won two of the 3-game series.

Brian Giles posted three hits -- including a homer and a triple -- and drove in two runs for the Padres Mark Loretta, who doubled and homered, was thrown out at the plate to end the game trying to score on a double to right field.

The Braves' Chris Reitsma (5-3) retired the side in the eighth and John Smoltz worked the ninth to earn his 31st save of the season. Paul Byrd, the Atlanta starter, gave up five runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Atlanta has won nine of its last 13 against the Padres.
