PHOENIX, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- Shea Hillenbrand's three-run homer highlighted a five-run fifth-inning rally as Arizona avoided a sweep with a 6-3 win over Pittsburgh Wednesday night.
The big rally was enough for Diamondbacks starter Casey Fossum, who snapped a streak of six straight losing decisions. Fossum (3-12) surrendered three runs on seven hits in seven innings of work, striking out five and walking two for his first win since July 1.
Quinton McCracken finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for lowly Arizona, which picked up only its second win in 13 tries. Scott Hairston added a solo blast, his fourth home run in six games.
Jason Kendall was 3-for-4 while doubling in two runs for the Pirates, who saw their four-game win streak come to an end.
Rookie pitching prospect John Van Benschoten (0-1) blew an early 3-0 lead in his major league debut and ended up with the loss.
