Orioles lose another outfielder for season

BALTIMORE, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The Baltimore Orioles lost another outfielder for the season Wednesday and put yet another on the 15-day disabled list.

The injury-plagued Jerry Hairston Jr. fractured his left ankle trying to catch a home run by Oakland's Adam Melhuse in Tuesday's 11-0 loss to the A's.

Hairston also missed the first six weeks of the 2004 campaign after breaking his finger in spring training and was sidelined for half of last season due to a broken right foot. The 28-year-old batted .303 with 43 runs scored and 13 stolen bases this year.

Larry Bigbie, who was hitting .268 with 13 homers and 52 RBI, has been out since Sunday with a strained hamstring.

Baltimore earlier lost starting centerfielder Luis Matos for the remainder of the year due to surgery on his shin.
