Tiger Woods equals world-ranking record

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Tiger Woods has now been the world's No. 1-ranked golfer for 331 weeks, tying the record long held by Greg Norman.

The record is for holding No. 1 at any time. Norman had the ranking many times between 1986 and 1998.

Woods already has the record for the longest consecutive stretch as No. 1 -- 261 weeks. He had been ranked No. 1 several times and then took the top spot in 1999 and hasn't given it up since.

Ernie Els is No. 2, close behind. Either Els or No. 3 Vijay Singh, a four-time winner this year, could take the lead from Woods if they place much higher than him in the PGA Championship this week.

Masters champion Phil Mickelson is No. 4 and Davis Love III is fifth.

Retief Goosen, who withdrew from the PGA tournament because of injuries, remains No. 6. Others in the top 10 are Mike Weir, Padraig Harringgton, Jim Furyk and Sergio Garcia.
