MLB: Pittsburgh 2, Los Angeles 3

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 largely in part to Brad Penny's pitching through eight innings.

Penny, who was acquired from Florida allowed just two hits, struck out four and walked one in the opening game of a 3-game series.

Shawn Green and Jayson Werth each had an RBI for the Dodgers, who improved to 25-8 over their last 33 games, and remain in first place in the NL West.

Lefthander Oliver Perez took the loss for Pittsburgh, which has dropped two straight and five of six. He struck out 10 in five innings, surrendering three runs on five hits.
