NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- The New York Yankees signed former American League batting champion John Olerud Tuesday.
The 35-year-old first baseman had been released by the Seattle Mariners in July.

Olerud, who joins the Yankees while their regular first baseman, Jason Giambi, is on the disabled list, won the AL batting title in 1993 with Toronto and is a three-time Gold Glove winner.
His career totals with the Blue Jays, New York Mets and Seattle include a .295 average and 244 home runs.
