Jacobsen leads Senior Open

ST. LOUIS, July 29 (UPI) -- Peter Jacobsen, three months removed from hip surgery, shot a 6-under 65 Thursday that put him in front after one round of the U.S. Senior Open.

Jacobsen had a one-shot lead over Craig Stadler. Both Jacobsen and Stadler began this year playing in the Mercedes Championship, a tournament reserved for previous season winners on the regular PGA Tour.

Jay Haas, playing in the Senior Open rather than trying for Ryder Cup points on the regular circuit, shot a 67 to stand alone in third.

The group at 68 included Mark McNulty, Don Pooley and Gil Morgan.

There were 26 sub-par rounds turned in at the Bellerive Country Club, the longest course ever used for the Senior Open.

"The conditions were perfect today," said Pooley, who won this tournament two years ago.
