MLB: Pittsburgh 4, Atlanta 3

ATLANTA, July 21 (UPI) -- Kris Benson retired 16 straight batters at one point and worked eight innings Wednesday night to lead Pittsburgh past Atlanta, 4-3.

Benson (8-7) surrendered two runs on five hits and then gave way to Jose Mesa, who earned his 27th save. Tike Redman paced the Pirates with a homer and three RBI.

It was only the fourth loss in 14 games for the Braves. J.D. Drew extended his hitting streak to 18 games in the loss.

Drew homered to lead off the ninth to bring the Braves within one, but Mesa retired the next three batters.
