STANFORD, Calif., July 14 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Venus Williams advanced at the Bank of the West Classic Wednesday with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lindsay Lee-Waters.
No. 5 seed Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi defeated Arantxa Parra Santonja 3-6, 7-5, 6-2; while No. 8 Maria Vento-Kabchi downed Anca Barna 6-2, 6-2 and Mashona Washington eliminated Marissa Irvin 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in other second-round matches.

In first-round action, Jelena Kostanic defeated Ashley Harkleroad 7-5, 4-6, 6-1 and Nicole Pratt topped Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 6-3. Marion Bartoli also was a winner with 6-1, 6-4 win over Elena Likhovtseva.
