Massu makes quarterfinals in Dutch event

AMERSFOORT, Netherlands, July 15 (UPI) -- Nicolas Massu of Chile beat home favorite Raemon Sluiter of the Netherlands at the Priority Telecom Open Thursday.

Massu the tournament's top seed and defending champion, topped the unseeded Sluiter 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the quarterfinals. In this event last year, Massu, as a seventh seed, beat No. 6 Sluiter in three sets in the tournament's title match.

Sluiter was the runner-up in 2000.

Elsewhere, fourth-seeded Martin Verkerk of the Netherlands beat Adrian Garcia 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4), countryman Dennis van Scheppingen routed Alejandro Falla of Colombia 6-2, 6-0 and Peter Luczak of Australia upset seventh-seeded Alberto Martin of Spain 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Luczak was able to save four match points.

David Sanchez beat Frenchman Jean-Rene Lisnard 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 and Tomas Behrend of Germany beat Albert Portas of Spain 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.
