Armstrong suffers off the road

FIGEAC, France, July 15 (UPI) -- France's David Moncoutie won Thursday's stage at the Tour de France while Lance Armstrong had a difficult day away from the roads.

Armstrong accused French journalists of trying to gain access to his hotel room and former champion Greg Lemond told a Paris newspaper he thought Armstrong was taking drugs.

Armstrong remains the heavy favorite to win the tour, even though he stayed in sixth place after Thursday's stage -- more than nine minutes behind overall leader Thomas Voeckler.

Despite the fact the last two stages have had several climbs, Armstrong has not made a move toward the top. He is expected to challenge the other contenders Friday when the stage finishes with a severe climb.

Armstrong, seeking a record sixth straight tour win, has been the target of drug-related questions throughout his career. But he has never failed a drug test and he is tested almost daily in the tour.
