"It felt good," Agassi said. "Anytime you accomplish something that only some of the

Agassi, 34, midway through his 18th year on the ATP Tour, had dropped his last four matches, losing in the first round of the last three.

Wayne Ferreira, the defending champion who is on the verge of retirement, was beaten by second-seeded Paradorn Srichaphan, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

Fourth-seeded Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty fell to German Nicolas Kiefer. No. 3 Mardy Fish defeated Jan Vacek of the Czech Republic, 7-6, (7-5) 6-2 but United States Olympic teammates Vince Spadea and Taylor Dent lost.
