Ferreira, 32, has captured 15 ATP titles in his 15-year career. He has decided to retire following next month's U.S. Open -- his 56th consecutive Grand Slam event -- and a Davis Cup tie.

Fourth-seeded Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty fell early Tuesday morning to German Nicolas Kiefer.

No. 3 Mardy Fish overcame a slow start to stop Jan Vacek of the Czech Republic, 7-6, (7-5) 6-2, but United States Olympic teammates Vince Spadea and Taylor Dent went out.

Frenchman Cyril Saulnier advanced when the sixth-seeded Spadea retired with back spasms after losing the first set.
