Swiss Open plagued by rain

GSTAAD, Sweden, July 8 (UPI) -- Germany's Rainer Schuettler and Spain's Felix Mantilla beat the rain Thursday at the Swiss Open.

In the only matches completed before play was suspended for the day due to darkness, the third-seeded Schuettler defeated Florian Mayer, 6-3, 6-2; and Mantilla upset No. 6 seed David Ferrer, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).

By advancing to the quarterfinals, Schuettler matched his best showing in four career appearances at the Swiss Open.

Mantilla, who won the 1997 Swiss Open, equaled his best performance of 2004. He faces Schuettler in the quarterfinals.

In a suspended match, Marc Rosset led Radek Stepanek, 6-4, 2-3.

Top seed Roger Federer, who returned to his home country after capturing a second straight Wimbledon title, never got on the court against Ivo Karlovic.

The world' top-ranked player has won 22 of his last 23 matches.
