Hawks to name new coach

ATLANTA, July 7 (UPI) -- The Atlanta Hawks scheduled a Thursday news conference to announce the hiring of Mike Woodson as their new coach.

Woodson has been an assistant with the Detroit Pistons.

Hawks General Manager Billy Knight and Woodson were teammates more than 20 years ago with the Kansas City Kings.

The 47-year-old Woodson will replace Terry Stotts, who was fired in May.

Woodson was an assistant under Larry Brown for the last three years -- two with Philadelphia and one with the Pistons, who stunned the Los Angeles Lakers in five games in the NBA Finals.

The Hawks were 52-85 under Stotts after he replaced Lon Kruger as coach in December 2002. During that time, the Hawks were sold to a nine-member ownership group and cut loose Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Theo Ratliff, Nazr Mohammed and Rasheed Wallace in a series of cost-cutting trades.
