LOS ANGELES, July 6 (UPI) -- Eric Gagne's record of 84 consecutive saves ranks with baseball's all-time greatest streaks.
After the Los Angeles closer's nearly two-year streak finally ended in a 6-5 win over Arizona Monday night, Dodger teammate Shawn Green said:
"The streak was an unbelievable thing to be a part of and witness day and night. "You can never say never but it feels untouchable like (Joe) DiMaggio, Cal Ripken or what Orel (Hershiser) did."
Green referred to Dimaggio's 56-game hitting streak, Ripken's 2,632 consecutive games and Hershiser's 59 consecutive scoreless innings.
"It will be interesting to see if any of us are alive when and if this kind of streak happens again," said Los Angeles Manager Jim Tracy.
Although Gagne had lost his chance for a save by letting Arizona tie the score in the ninth, he was given a huge ovation by the crowd at Dodger Stadium
"That ovation was probably the best time I've had in baseball," Gagne said. "The guys in the dugout have been unbelievable. We're a family ... I'll look back on it more when I'm retired."
