MLB: Chicago Cubs 7, Houston 5

CHICAGO, June 29 (UPI) -- Corey Patterson homered and drove in three runs and LaTroy Hawkins escaped a ninth-inning jam Tuesday night as the Chicago Cubs defeated Houston, 7-5.

Houston's Andy Pettitte, who has been battling a left forearm strain all season, made his first appearance since May 26 and was solid.

He allowed three runs and four hits in five innings, walked three and struck out seven.

Patterson erased a one-run deficit with an RBI double in the second and got Chicago within 4-3 in the fourth with a two-run shot. Both hits came off Pettitte.

After Chicago's Aramis Ramirez and Houston's Carlos Beltran exchanged solo homers, the Cubs took a 7-5 lead with a three-run seventh.

The key play in the frame was a two-run, two-base error by Craig Biggio -- who was handling just his second chance as a left fielder.
