LONDON, June 23 (UPI) -- Rain prevented play Wednesday in the Wimbledon Championships.
All 74 matches on the schedule were postponed in the tournament's first full-day rainout since 1999.
A report on the tournament's Web site early in the day said play "has been postponed until further notice because of persistent rain." Later, officials said plans were to resume play at 6 a.m. EDT Thursday.
Among the players unable to continue matches was the No. 3 seed, Guillermo Coria of Argentina, who was two points away from winning a five-set marathon against South Africa's Wesley Moodie. Others unable to resume rain-delayed matches included American Andy Roddick, who was leading Taiwan's Yeu-Tzoo Wang in the first set.
Defending men's champion Roger Federer of Switzerland and seventh-seeded Lleyton Hewitt of Australia were among others scheduled to play Wednesday.
Forty-seven-year-old Martina Navratilova of the United States awaited her second-round match against Argentina's Gisela Dulko, who beat the veteran at the French Open.
