Killeen, Sergas shrare LPGA lead

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J., June 18 (UPI) -- Denise Killeen and Giulia Sergas took different routes to the top of the leaderboard Friday at the Marriott Seaview Resort.

Killeen and Sergas shot 6-under-par 65s and share the lead after the first round of the ShopRite LPGA Classic.

A 42-year-old from Georgia, Killen had an eagle and four birdies during a bogey-free trip. Sergas, a 24-year-old from Trieste, Italy, offset eight birdies with two bogeys as she seeks the first win of her three-year career.

Cristie Kerr was alone in third place after a 5-under 66 while veterans Brandie Burton and Dawn Coe-Jones were among five players who opened with 67s.

Defending champion Angela Stanford was not among them. She struggled to a 5-over 76.

The 27-year-old Stanford led from wire-to-wire last year en route to her first LPGA Tour title. She lost in a playoff a week later at the U.S. Women's Open and is 20th on this year's money list.

Stuck between two major tournaments, the ShopRite Classic is without Swedish superstar Annika Sorenstam and Korean standout Grace Park.
